چکیده

This paper combines on-the-job search and human capital theory to study the coexistence of …rm-funded general training and frequent job turnovers. Although ex ante identical, …rms di¤er in their training decisions. The model generates correlations between various …rm characteristics that are consistent with the data. Wage dispersion exists among ex ante identical workers because workers of the same productivity are paid di¤erently across …rms, and because workers di¤er in their productivity ex post. Endogenous training breaks the perfect correlation between work experience and human capital, which yields new insights on wage dispersion and wage dynamics.

The value of leisure or disutility of work: Wage dispersion in a model of search with endogenous effort

Wage dispersion is generated in a sequential search environment through heterogeneity in firm productivity along with an individual wage-effort tradeoff. For a given degree of TFP dispersion, the framework can generate any amount of wage dispersion. Calibrated to generate realistic gains from trade, it is able to generate the kind of wage dispersion observed in data. JEL codes: E24, J64

Frictional Wage Dispersion in Search Models: A Quantitative Assessment

Standard search and matching models of equilibrium unemployment, once properly calibrated, can generate only a small amount of frictional wage dispersion, i.e., wage differentials among ex-ante similar workers induced purely by search frictions. We derive this result for a specific measure of wage dispersion—the ratio between the average wage and the lowest (reservation) wage paid. We show that...

Job Search, Human Capital and Wage Inequality

Job Search, Human Capital and Wage Inequality The objective of this paper is to construct and quantitatively assess an equilibrium search model with on-the-job search and general human capital accumulation. In the model workers enter the labour market with different abilities and firms differ in their productivities. Wages are dispersed because of search frictions and workers’ productivity diff...

On the firms’ component of wage dispersion: Endogenous effort versus search frictions

This paper presents an environment in which firms’ productive heterogeneity passes through to wage dispersion via sequential search and endogenous worker effort levels. Despite small gains from trade, the model is able account for more than two thirds of the measured firm component of wage dispersion. The implied narrow range of worker utility effectively pins down the lowest wage in the distri...

Directed Search and Inter-industry Wage Differentials

Directed search models are specified to explain the observed wage dispersion. This class of models generates wage dispersion with homogenous workers across firms. Recent work has extended this theoretical framework to offer a possible resolution of inter-industry wage differentials (IWDs) with multiple skill types. I perform a GMM estimation of an extension of a directed search model (Shimer; 2...
